My name is Tessa Kelley and I'm 27 years old. I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, with a love and passion for the outdoors and being active. Growing up, I was involved in Track and Field, and Swimming and Diving, during my middle and high school years. When I went to college, I even made it on the ASU Track and Field team during my freshman year tryouts.
Though I was often successful in my athletic feats, I struggled for a few years with an eating disorder categorized as binging and sometimes, purging. I have since healed this disorganized eating pattern with mental strategies I've learned through my own personal experience and through therapy at a rehabilitation center. Alongside my eating disorder diagnosis, I was considered depressed and used substances as an ineffective tool to cope with my traumas. I know what it's like to be there at the "rock bottom" of your life, or even just at confused and lost periods of my life I could do differently now.
Additionally, I am no stranger to injury; I've broken quite a few bones, mostly from snowboarding, which is one of my favorite passions. At the beginning of 2018, I endured a brutal snowboarding accident in which I broke my jaw, neck, several teeth and kinked a cervical artery. After a medically-induced coma and extensive surgery, I was put on a 6-week liquid diet. It took a few weeks post-injury for me to push past my mental difficulties to realize how lucky I was to even be alive at that point. I took the accident that completely broke me and I started turning it into fuel to enhance the rest of my living days. With the help of the mandatory liquid diet, I completely changed my diet and starting focusing on feeling really good for the longest duration. No quick fixes over here.
With a "mind over matter" attitude already beginning to form, I discovered Kundalini yoga and meditation, which is one of the oldest forms of yoga with the belief that everyone has potent coiled energy at the base of the spine that can be uncoiled through breath work and meditation that helps reduce stress and unlock our fullest potential. It often encompasses specific yoga poses to be held for longer than your mind wants you to, which allows us to actively break these limiting thoughts and carry out these mindfulness practices in our everyday life to bring us closer to our desired manifestations.
